Chelsea will do battle with La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid for Lyon’s highly-rated defender Dejan Lovren, according to the Daily Express.

The young centre-back has caught the eye in the Europa League this season, putting in strong performances against Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Tottenham.

The 23-year-old would command a fee of around £8.5million from the Ligue 1 club, and may be an essential signing for the Blues, who could lose both John Terry and David Luiz from their back four at the end of the season.

Chelsea captain Terry, 32, is considering a new challenge after finding himself on the bench for a large chunk of the season under interim boss Rafael Benitez. And despite the fact that Benitez will be replaced by a new manager in the summer, Terry is tempted by a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Meanwhile, Brazilian centre-back Luiz is a target for Barcelona. The Catalans are said to be lining up a bid of around £35million for Luiz, as they make defensive reinforcements a priority in the transfer market this summer.

Lovren would go some way to repairing the damage, and the Stamford Bridge club have also been linked with Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

LIsandro LopezBig scoring striker ready to quit France.Lyon striker Lisandro Lopez has alerted Spurs to his availability by claiming that he’s ready to quit the French club, according to The Metro.

The 30-year-old has grown disillusioned at the club after a series of rows with manager Remi Garde and is now ready for a fresh challenge after four years in the Southeast.

With the poor form of Emmanuel Adebayor taking its toll on Spurs this season, Andre Villas-Boas is said to be looking at new attacking options and is a known admirer of Argentine international.

Lopez has opened the door for the North London club by declaring his desire to leave, saying: ”I don’t think it is possible for me to continue here, Before the end of the season I’m going to meet with the president and the coach and we’ll see.”

The striker joined the club as a replacement for Karim Benzema from Porto in 2009 for a fee of €24 million, and has gone on to score 79 goals in 156 games. He scored the winner in last season’s Coup de France final against US Quevilly, making sure that his time with the club wasn’t completely trophy-less.

With just under 18 months left on his current deal, Lyon are believed to want somewhere in the region of £5 million for him.

LIsandro LopezWhite Hart Lane bid to sign Lyon forward did not come off.

Tottenham failed with a January transfer deadline day move for Lyon striker Lisandro Lopez, it has emerged.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas was desperate to bring in a new frontman in the final days of the transfer window with Emmanuel Adebayor on international duty with Togo at the African Cup of Nations and Jermain Defoe sidelined for three weeks through injury.

Villas-Boas backed out of a deal to sign number one target Leandro Damiao from Internacional because of the complicated third-party ownership of the Brazilian international striker, and made do without a new addition to his options.

But it has emerged that the White Hart Lane club made a last minute bid to sign Argentine forward Lopez on loan from Lyon for the remainder of the season only for the approach to be turned down by the French Ligue 1 side.

The bid to sign Lopez, who has been with Lyon since 2009, was revealed by his former team-mate Hugo Lloris, who is now Tottenham’s first choice goalkeeper.

French international Lloris told L’Equipe: “Lisandro? It seems he almost joined Tottenham. He is a great player, charismatic and one who has given a lot to Lyon. He is a top player, who works hard for the team and can win matches. He is a player that deserves the best.”

Lloris and Lopez will come face to face on Thursday when Tottenham host Lyon in the Europa League.
